I have a dimension called Dim_CP_Episodes_Worker_District. There is another dimension coming off of this dimension called Dim_Population_ONS
This dimension contains population figures each year for the districts. The ID in Dim_Population_ONS is DW_Pop_ID.
DW_POP_ID is also in Dim_Population_ONS to create the link.
In analysis services I created the Data Source and added Dim_Population_ONS. After sorting out the dimensions I created the cube and again added Dim_Population_ONS after the star had been made. After processing and attempting to use it it became clear that Dim_Population_ONS was not linked properly.
I went back to Analysis Services and clicked on the dimension usage tab
Dim_Population_ONS had nothing against it in the measure group. I clicked on the null value box and and drop down list icon appeared which I clicked. This brought up the next box <B>Define Relationship</B> Currently this states that no relationship has been defined
I want to create a relationship so I go to select relationship type and chose <B>referenced</B> from the list of types.
Intermediate dimension Social Care Master Area
Referenced Dimension attribute DW_POP_ID
Intermediate Dimension attribute DW_POP_ID
The next task is to process so I click on the process button.
However its Still not working in the dimension browser
Here Every year and areas population is being linked to an area. There should only be 1 population. Per area I think this is a back to the drawing board.
Has anyone got more info on how to use referenced dimensions. Querying the tables in SQL works fine.

A little confused with your wording at the beginning about how these tables are related. Maybe you could simplify this and cut out some of the wording or possibly re-read what you have typed because it doesn't make sense.
It sounds like what you are calling a dimension table with populations for districts per year is actually a fact table. That is what is confusing me even more. If you have populations by district by year, then this would be a fact table, not another dimension table.

I have put population figures in a dimension 'Dim_Population_ONS' and referenced this table from the area dimension because I thought that these figures were not specifically measurements about child protection.
However I will recreate these as a fact table because Im still struggling with the referencing.
