I keep getting a message during installation that says: 'setup was unable to verify state of the server for an upgrade. verfiy the server is able to start and that you provided a valid sa password and restart setup'
All the NT services packs had been installed before I downloaded the patch. I checked the sa password and it is correct. I could restart the server and restart SQL Server. I read through some of the previous posting and upgraded from MDAC 2.6 to 2.7 Refresh. Alas, the same message is still appears and it is driving me nuts!
Can anyone help?

Can you post the last ten 10 lines or so from your sqlsp.log? Typically it's in C:\WINNT\ or C:\WINDOWS\ or wherever your system root is.
There was a problem in SP2 with spaces in the path for the TEMP variable path and I am wondering if it is related:

So far so good. Removing the space from the directory name has not brought up the error and appears to be installing the SP. Hooray!
Thanks so much.
