Problems configuring Reporting Service (Express Edt.)

  • Hello there.

First: The problems have their orinin in ExpressEdt.Installation of RS. The DefaultInstallation did not SetUp the ReportingServices, just installed the files. So I had to configure the ReportingServices on my own. I used the "Reporting Services Configuration Manager".

Now I've got some problems configuring the reporting services. First problems are the virtual directories.

I've tried some different users for authentification. I used a local user with lower rights, an admin-user, Network Service and IUSR_MachineName for directory security. Tried to use WindowsAuthentification and AnonymousAcces.

The AppPool-Identity runs with NeworkService rights.

When I browse the page i get an "You are not authorized to view this page..."-error.

The mentioned users have rights on the local folders and are in IIS_WPG-Group.

    Whats the problem here?

Second thing I have to tell is that in "RS Config Manager" the "Initialization"-tab has a (X), so i cant get into this program-part.

    Please help me....

    ****************************************************

From SQL Server 2005 Books Online:  An initialized report server describes a server that can encrypt and decrypt sensitive data that is stored in a report server database (for example, stored credentials and connection strings). Report server initialization is a requirement for report server operations.

I would suggest that, since the Initialization tab has an (X), that means that some critical part of the installation failed; consequently, Reporting Services was not properly initialized.  And, if not properly initialized, according to books online, it's inevitable that you will have problems performing report server operations.  In some editions of Reporting Services, there is an Initialization option that allows you to initialize the server after installation.  According to Books Online, this IS NOT supported in SQL Server 2005 Express Edition with Advanced Services, SQL Server 2005 Workgroup Edition, or SQL Server Standard Edition.  To make a long story short, it has to do with encryption keys.  [ http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms181357.aspx

Assuming there is not a problem with your IIS installation, you would probably save time by re-installing, if this is an option, Reporting Services and allowing the installation program to setup/configure Reporting Services.  As a note, I would suggest creating a back-up encryption key as soon as you get Reporting Services running.  Trust me, chances are you'll need it (speaking from experience).

  • Hello Lonv.

I found out the problem is caused by the website where the virtual directories are in.

For publishing the website I put a IP-adress in and made some host header-entries. After deleting them ReportManager und ReportServer are working fine.

Whats the problem using RS and HostHeaders?

    Thanks in advance, Tobi

  • Hello There.

    Here some additional informations:

I get the error: "HTTP Error 401.1 - Unauthorized: Access is denied due to invalid credentials"

    Credentials AppPool: "Network Service"

    Credential WebSite: Windows Auth.

    Credential VirtDirect.: Windows Auth.

As Credential i us a local user. This user is in Adminstrator group.

    Thanks in advance, Tobi

  • My experience with Host Headers is this:

As long as the Report Server Address in your .config files, the address you use in VS for the RS match the host header it works fine. But issues arrise when one uses IP and the other uses your host header address.

I'm not saying this is a RULE, but this is the way our system is configured and all works fine.
