When I create a report in SSRS 2008 and I add a group, the group appears in the object as it should and it shows as a group in the Properties Dropdown but nothing appears in the Grouping Pane. I have tried reinstalling SQL Server and nothing changes.

Presumably you're talking about adding a group in a table or a matrix?
Can you provide some more detail, or some screenshots or something? Maybe compare what you're seeing with what you think you should be seeing.

Thank you for responding to my question and I apologize for taking so long to reply back. I had to have some emergency foot surgery.
I am in fact adding a group as you can see from the attached screen shot.I expect to group to appear on the design surface with the colored indicator and it does. I also expected to see my group in the Group Pane, but is not there. If it helps, I am doing the SSRS exercise in the Stairways.
Thank you

Joe -
Presumably you've tried things like selecting the entire tablix and seeing if the groups appear then? Sometimes what appears in those grouping panes below varies based on if you're selecting an individual cell versus a header, row, or the whole table.
Try that, any joy?

I tried selecting everything under the sun and still no joy - Joe Wolfe

Try opening that rdl file in Report Builder, what happens then?

So that I understand your question correctly... You are expecting to see this:
but instead you are seeing just grey where (group1) and details should be. That is the problem correct?

Sorry for the late reply, I've been traveling and super-busy but have been meaning to get back to this post. I'm sorry to say that I don't have much of a solution, it just looked like people in this thread were not understanding your problem. I have seen other equally weird behavior in BIDS (Business Intelligence Development Studio) that I was fixed by a re-install.
The problem you are having appears to be related to BIDS (if that is what you are using). You said that you tried re-installing SQL Server - did you reinstall BIDS as part of that? Either way you may want to re-install BIDS (e.g. run the installer, do add/remove componants, remove BIDS... run the installer again and add BIDS. You may also check for updates. If you are using full blown Visual Studio instead of BIDS then re-installing SQL Server would not have fixed anything and you may want to re-install Visual Studio.
My world is mostly SSRS these days and, I'll be honest, I just use this stuff and have not installed/configured VS/BIDS in a few years so take what I said with a grain of salt. The best advice I can give is to re-post this problem under Reporting Services 2008 Development with the Title, "Problem with BIDS". I think you'll get a better answer. Hope that helps.
P.S. If you are at SQL PASS (I could not go this year :crying: ) - go talk to the CAT[/url] people. They'll figure it out in 30 seconds (they're real good)

FWIW, at no point did I fail to understand the problem.
Still no response as to what happens when the file is opened in Report Builder...

Sorry, I guess I had a senior moment, thought I answered you back....Nothing changed in Report Builder. Maybe it is a BIDS install issue

Earlier, I said nothing happened when I opened the RDL in Report Builder, but I was wrong....The group DOES appear in the Grouping Pane. Joe

I finally found the solution to my Grouping Pane issue. I can't believe the the solution was simply that the panel needed to be enlarged.
