Hi
I am in need of help. I had Sql server 2008 R2 installed before. I project I got demanded that I removed R2 and installed 2008 instead. Easy? Hell no.
I made uninstall on R2, but I see that there are some stuff left.
I tried to remove All leftover that involves 2008 r2.
I now installed 2008. But SSRS could not be installed.
I got this message:
Details
Product: SQL Server
ID: 50000
Source: setup.rll
Version: 10.0
Component: SQL Server Native Client
Message: A network error occurred while attempting to read from the file '%.*ls'.
Explanation
An attempt was made to install (or update) SQL Server Native Client on a computer where SQL Server Native Client is already installed, and where the existing installation was from an MSI file that was not named sqlncli.msi.
User Action
To resolve this error, uninstall the existing version of SQL Server Native Client. To prevent this error, do not install SQL Server Native Client from an MSI file that is not named sqlncli.msi.
I have searched and searched with google, but have not found a solution that works.
Please help me out.
Best Regards
Samuel

I have faced this problem several times while installing between SQL Server 2008 R2 standard and enterprise edition. The solution to the problem is that after un-installing the current instance of SQL Server 2008 on your machine, reboot and then remover SQL Server 2008 path from environment variables. Then reboot again and install the SQL Server native client (you will be prompted for that while you run SQL Server R2 2008 installation) because without native client you wont be able to install SQL Server R2 2008 properly.
Check for automatically configuring SSRS...If the error persists, restart SQL Server 2008 installation and this time check configuring SSRS manually checkbox.
Hope this helps!

To clarify one thing I want to uninstall 2008 R2 and install 2008. I have earlier uninstalled R2 and installed 2008, but SSRS is not installed for some reason and I get the error message.
So I did as you said.
uninstalled defualt instance of 2008 (only instance on my computer) Reboot
removed from environmental variables:
;C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Tools\Binn;C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Tools\Binn;C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\DTS\Binn;c:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Tools\binn and rebooted.
installed 2008 again. with automatic config as you suggested.
(I did not manually install Sql server native client, I expected it to be installed automatically with the Sql server installation, it was)
Unfourtantly same problem. SSRS installation of SSRS failed.
Any other suggestions?

Samuel,
The log shows that your setup file is corrupted. I would suggest you installing from a newer medium and that after you have deleted all the bad installed files.
Just try it and lemme know if it helps.

If I was in your position, I would ask for Windows to be re-installed.
IMHO it is never worth uninstalling SQL Server. After it is installed, it should be considered as a core part of the OS, and if a situation arises where the SQL Server services must be removed fom the box, then the safest way to do this is by installing a new copy of the OS.

I finally accepted that it was best to reinstall Windows. Not fun, but now it works.
Thanks for you help.

SS2K8 R2 Ent install on Win2K8 R2 Ent 64 bit hates me 😉
I give up, it is time rebuild the server from scratch :hehe:

I was having the same problem with Sp1. I found that the install directory can not have any spaces at all. You should notice that t installation folder for SQL has underscores instead of spaces, the path to this directory must not have spaces as well. So if you place this in a folder on the c: drive called "install folder", for example, then replace the space with an underscore or remove it. So the old would be c:\install folder\sqlinstall and the new path would be c:\install_folder\sqlinstall. This should fix the error.
