Problem installing SQL Server 2000

  • has anyone had problems installing sql server 2000? I'm trying to install it on a XP machine, I know it will only install as a client, which is what I want, the problem I get is it tells me it's detected a previous install that hasn't completed, please reboot and try again. The thing is I'm trying to install on a pc that has never had the server on it, and no matter how many times I reboot I get the same problem. I have installed the server on XP machines before with no problems, so I know it isn't the operating system. Can anyone help?

  • seen this many times; you can search SSC for "completely uninstall" or "manually uninstall" and find lots of info like this thread here:

  • thanks for answering the question, the only thing is, I've never had SQL Server on the pc in the first place, so there's nothing to uninstall, but I still get the same problem. Any other suggestions. Plus, if I wanted to install it as a proper server on windows XP is that possible, I've always thought you need a server platform to be able to do this

  • nowadays, some programs will install the desktop edition as their database, instead of access or some other system; i've heard that new dell systems have it preinstalled to hold some of their data as well.

So it could be an application you installed put a version on your machine that you did not know about.

As far as putting it on XP; if you install the standard or enterprise versions on your machine, because it is not a server operating system, it automatically 'dummies itself down' to the desktop /developer version. Functionality wise there is no difference, except that you are limited to 10 simultaneous connections, instead of unlimited like theh full version would permit.
