Problem installing a 2nd named instance

  • I have a Windows Server hosting our SQL Server 2005 SQL Server Databases at SP3

I have a Default and two named instances and I need to add a third named instance.

These are the steps I am taking :

    Run SQL Server 2005 Setup

    accept licensing agreement.

Installing prerequisites - required componnets successfully install - click next

    Performs system configuration check

System configuration check throws one warning:

To change an existing instance of Microsoft SQL Server 2005 to a different edition of SQL Server 2005, you must run SQL Server 2005 Setup from the command prompt and include the SKUUPGRADE=1 parameter.

    Registration information - Next

Feature Selection - choose all and click Next

Next screen - get an error that setup is blocked:

Name: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Tools

Reason: Your upgrade is blocked. For more information about upgrade support, see the "Version and Edition Upgrades" and "Hardware and Software Requirements" topics in SQL Server 2005 Setup Help or SQL Server 2005 Books Online.

    Build version check:

Your upgrade is blocked because the existing component is a later version than the version you are trying to upgrade to. To modify an existing SQL Server component, go to Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel, select the component you would like to modify, and then click Change/Remove.

Have idea what I'm doing wrong.. I've tried the process through Add\Remove Programs and I get the same results. can anyone help?

well your title says 2nd named instance but your description says 3rd named instance. are all the instances the same edition and the same as the one you are trying to install.

  • My mistake. I have 1 default Instance and 2 named instances and am looking to install a third.

We only have SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition in House so all instances are Standard Edition .

  • This is the answer and a guideline:

you must run SQL Server 2005 Setup from the command prompt and include the SKUUPGRADE=1 parameter.

Don't forget to patch the new instance after installation.

  • The error says, you are trying to upgrade to an older version!

Are you typing a unique instance name or you're keeping the default instance?

  • Was tempted to point that out, but i thought i would wait to see what editions are installed first 😛

  • It is never Prompting me to keyin a new Instance name !!!!

Why all of a sudden do I have to run the install from a command prompt??

  • I think thats where the problem lies. It's trying to upgrade the default instance (which u might have patched to higher builds)... It should throw you a screen asking you to select either a default instance or a named instance..

  • I was just trying to install an instance. The screen after you select "components to install" should be the screen asking you for the instance name...

    Pradeep Singh

  • After the 'components to install' screen , The upgrade is blocked because it thinks that I am installing a different edition.

on the Feature Selection screen or ''components to install' screen , I try and click browse to change the installation path (which is currently D:\Micorsoft SQL Server\AML\ ) (AML Is the name of one of my existing Instances) I get an error saying "The SQL server shared path has aleady been configured.. ???
