prob connecting to server via enterprise manager

  • I am running a sql 2k, and I remember actually being able to connect to the server. Because I actually set up a couple of tables in it.

    But lo and behold, I come back a couple of weeks later (this is my client's machine, and it is not live as yet) and the connection fails!

    Trying to connect again using the right-click->connect option, gives me the following error message:

    A connection could not be established to servername.

    Reason: General network error. Check your network documentation.

    ConnectionOpen (PreLoginHandsake())..

    Please verify SQL Server is running and check your SQL Server registration properties (by right-clicking on the servername node) and try again.

    I checked and the server icon in the taskbar shows that sqlserver is running (green arrow).

    And as far as I know, the 'user Windows authentication' option was always used.

    What could be wrong??!!

    Perhaps I should mention that my client's network was hit by the recent worm scare. and though they patched the machine, they didnt test the applications on it (like i said, it isnt live)

    And I should perhaps also add that in the course of troubleshooting, I found that the port that the coldfusion server listened to got changed too. (of course could have been some guy who just came along with too much time on his hands..)

  • Can you ping the server? I'd also confirm that they havent changed the port it runs on (look in error log or in server utility on the server).
