Unfortunatelly I have to disagree with your comments about APC being late warning their customers. They have been sending the warning emails for months now. I have received at least 3 of them.

I concur with Jacek. I got the email the other day, but that is not the first. I received the below email on Jul 14.
PowerChute Business Edition version 6.x Expiration Date: July 27,2005

In order for PowerChute Business Edition Basic and Deluxe to remain functional, users must upgrade to any version of 7.x.
Due to expiration of the Sun Java Runtime Environment certificate, versions 6.x of PowerChute Business Edition will cease to function on July 27, 2005. Failure to upgrade will render PowerChute Business Edition inoperable. This software upgrade is free of charge and is available on APC's web site.

Here one user is blaming WinXX Patches and SPs for the problems. He worked with a Dell Rep that didn't know it either.

I am just trying to say, that APC sent out notices prior to this week. I have an email from over a month ago, and sorta recall getting one prior to that.

That may be true and I hope that they sent out lots of them. I had the person reporting this say he got one this week and I had two other large sys admins, in terms of servers, not personal girth , tell me they hadn't heard about it.
To be fair, I did not inquire as to whether they had registered, but APC should have a good idea of how many people register v buy and they should have this as a very visible item and publicize it. I'm sure MS is getting lots of calls for hung servers after patching that are not their fault.

The story was good too. Just that we have PowerChute 6.5 running on about half our servers (25) and we're now trying to upgrade them.

As a developer, I found your story offensive, especially the
self-serving cheap shots at "cowboy" developers...sometimes the developers that you perceive as "cowboys" are just trying to get the job done on time and within budget, and doing whatever it takes to make it happen, often without very much useful, timely
support from the DBAs. In the particular case you described, if your predecessor had done his/her job properly, there would have
been no need for the "cowboy" to go out and get the certificate
on his own.
