Please help!! Going to SQL Bootcamp.

  • I was hoping to receive some feedback so that I know I am on the right track. I am a SQL newbie (at least that is how I feel!) that was assigned 5 servers running SQL 2000/2005 about 6 months ago. I have built each of the database servers from scratch and restored each server with a database copy from a NetApp volume. I run generic counts to make sure tables are updating and have a few jobs created but have been looking around this forum to make sure I have everything covered since I don't really have any guidance...yay fun 🙂 I have noted a few things that I am not doing so plan to incorporate those ideas.

My company has just signed me up for the SQL 2008 bootcamp with Global Knowledge because we have plans to upgrade to 2008 by the end of the year and I found out it is in about 3 weeks!!!! I feel like I have a good grasp on SQL but am still fuzzy with terms and have not worked with the 2008 version as of yet. I HAVE to pass this course so I did some digging on good books and have ordered 2 so far, the Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Admin Pocket Consultant and Professional SQL Server 2008 Internals and Troubleshooting by a bunch of authors including Brent Ozar. So I am reading and watching videos and my next step was to download SQL Server 2008 Express at home and play with that working on the test objectives.

Has anyone attended a bootcamp like the one I am going to? Do you feel like I am covering all my bases? I know a lot of DBA's aren't fond of the bootcamp aspect but I just want to make sure I am as prepared as possible so the week isn't me trying to learn on the fly. I would like to be fairly confident going in so that I am not stressing about the tests as much :). Thanks in advance for any help and have a great 4th of July!!

Those might be a little (ok a lot) advanced for someone doing a ITP bootcamp

I figure if you start with those, then nothing in that bootcamp should be too hard or scary.
