Please advice on learning replication.

  • I am going to learn replication, but in our environment we have only one 2005 server and one 2008 server, and the book that I am learning replication is for 2005.

My questions are : is it possible to replicate from 2005 to 2008, as well as other way around - is it possible to replicate from 2008 to 2005 version ? And what is better for learning purposes ?

    Thanks.

  • The replication is possible between 2005 to 2008 and 2008 to 2005. They are almost the same. The difference is between 2000 and 2005.

I would say learn with the book you have. That should help. They have not changed much in replication between 2005 and 2008. Just made it more robust.

    Just my 2 cents

  • I also want to point out that it is possible for a Server Instance to replicate to itself, as long as it's a different database. In fact the first production replication environment that I setup and maintained 8 years ago was from one database to another on the same server instance.
