Thank you for the post, Steve, very interesting one.
(..in previous month I was reading this article http://blogs.msdn.com/b/igorpag/archive/2014/01/15/sql-server-2014-inside-hekaton-natively-compiled-stored-procedures.aspx and came across "sql_handle" and "plan_handle".. then started exploring in the local_help and with no relation I was reading plan guides. While answering the qtod I didn't recall any of these three types, after reading the choices I was sure, somehow. good it worked :-))
Line from the help. Interesting.

Plan guides can be useful when a small subset of queries in a database application provided by a third-party vendor are not performing as expected.

(2014 has lots of features, not sure when we will have real-time exposure... probably we may end up creating our own scenarios just to test these stuff.. :-D)

Nice question, Steve, thanks. I didn't know about those. When your question mentioned SQL Server 2014, I thought it was something new to 2014, but it looks like it goes back to 2005 (with the same three available types).
Why does your explanation reference SQL Server 2041? Do you have some inside information about a version coming out 27 years from now? :hehe:

A very interesting question and I got to learn something new, which is always the goal with the QOTD. Thanks.
