Ah but Gail did you not know that SQL Server is self tuning indexes never get fragmented statistics are always up to date (especially when do an upgrade from oh say 2000 to 2005) irrespecitve of the size of the database , frequency of data loads , frequency of schema changes,the use of adhoc queries or generated code or generated schema objects (I have just worked with a client that had a product that would generate database objects and then drop them but bizarrely as he put it was not performing) and never forgetting that maintenance plans are unecessary as they can take time execute and effect performance etc etc
After all as one lead developer once said to me it just a container that looks after it self...:)

ah well at least I'm not the only one who encounters poor servers setups and databases! Still I make my living mainly from performance tuning so i shouldn't comlain!
