I knew it's possible but didn't know that it could be with the -x option in the startup options.
Thanks

I didn't know about the startup option either. Learning something new is always a good start to the day. Thanks.

What would be the purpose?

Thanks for the question.

The purpose is to glean every last possible amount of performance from your system. I was reviewing white papers on virtualization and noticed it. Check the second link, somewhere in there the -x is mentioned. Microsoft says it has no effect (according to the blog) and I did not test it.

I believe that you can also set a reg key to do this. http://blogs.technet.com/b/pfelatam/archive/2011/08/08/sql-performance-counters-are-missing.aspx
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Perflib\Disable Performance Counters
Regards.
