just a heads up in, since FTS is not part of the SQL engine you will need be able to find log info through SSMS
the log can be found in the install folder.....Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\LOG..SQLFTXXXXXXX.log
As soon as I was able to locate the logs I was able to find the answer, in this case the resources became full on the FT search engine, and this cased them it to go into a paused state....restarting the FT service did the trick.
