Paul Randal Myth #30: various myths around backups...
All are FALSE!!
30-05) a full or differential backup clears the log
No. A log backup includes all the log since the last log backup - nothing can change that - no matter whether that log was also backed up by a full or differential backup. I had a famous argument on Twitter last year and wrote this blog post as proof: Misconceptions around the log and log backups: how to convince yourself. In the FULL or BULK_LOGGED recovery models, the *only* thing that clears the log is a log backup.
After getting so much help in this forum and then to find that our own DBA believed this myth, I was getting discouraged. So, I sought help from a forum member who is becoming a friend. I'll keep her name out of this - let's just say 'Gail S.' (no, too obvious) - 'G. Shaw' (no, that'll give it away) - let's call her 'Gila M', who fired me some references including her own article on managing transaction logs.
As a relative newbie to this forum, I'm surprised to see how pervasive this myth is and I was concerned about our exposure to data loss. I was prepared this morning for another day of debate when the guy showed up at my desk - he saw the light after reading numerous references and some threads from this forum that I sent to him.
We are implementing a thorough review of our backups and the help I have received in this forum has been critical in getting that done.
Sincere thanks to you all.
