We have SAP on a HP-server with W2003 and SQL2000 (SP3a). We want to use 8 Gb of RAM in total, 2.4 of which for SAP and 2.4 for SQL for data caching. So we have to put the /3GB and /PAE switches in boot.ini (NOT the /AWE).
As soon as we activate the /PAE-switch however, we start getting occasional error messages from SQL : "DBIF_RSQL_SQL_ERROR". SAP points out that the cause it is not SAP-related. We eliminated hardware causes by completing replacing the hardware (except the disks).
Is anyone experiencing the same problem ? Surely, we cannot be the only one : the cause must be Windows2003 or SQL2000 or the combination.

Without turning on 'AWE' , SQL Server will not be able to use memory beyond 4GB boundary and will complete the 3GB memory with SAP within 4GB.
"DBIF_RSQL_SQL_ERROR" is very general error message in SAP system and you have to look into all realated errors in SAP log and ABAP dump errors in order to ping out what happened exactly.
Check SAP note 327494 for how to configure memory when SAP and SQL Server reside in same box.

According to the Microsoft documantation, the /PAE switch is not needed in W2003 - it is effectively enabled as a default.
This means all you need to do is enable AWE in SQL.
