  • Grant is right about the benefits of having interests outside of work and family.  I am a member of the Tadley Men's Shed, and enjoy a lot of the things men of all genders do at the shed.

We have been making benches for the wellbeing garden at our local high school. Nothing sophisticated, mostly made out of old pallets, but they provide useful seating space in the garden.

The social side of chatting about what to do and the new friendships made while doing the work is as important as the community benefit the benches and other things bring.

The Men's Shed movement is international, so a web search may find one local to you. At Tadley we got a grant that helped buy a surplus portable metal  cabin 3mx10m, which has been fitted out with metalwork and woodwork tools, plus wheelchair access and a space to boil a kettle for the vital cup of tea.

There are lots of other ways people can get outside interests, but Men's Shed is well worth trying.

  • Grant, how did you find out about your local maker's faire? Is there an organization that tracks that sort of thing?

There is an organization in town that runs a maker space, but I found out about it through the radio club when they asked for volunteers.
