Good article. It is human nature to wait till something breaks before spending any money or time on it.
In the best case it may be a few hours of a consultants time; the worst case could be losing your business or customer base. So in essence, having a competent DBA/Architect on staff is like insurance for your product or service.
The probability of survival is inversely proportional to the angle of arrival.

I really like your idea of a forum just for Accidental DBAs.
We have "Newbies" forums in all areas, or most of them. This was also the idea behind the "Stairway" series to help you get started in a few areas. Some of our books are also geared towards getting you up to speed in areas.
Yes, you're right, Steve, I'd forgotten about the Newbies forums. Sometimes we engineer types can so compartmentalize things that "SQL Newbie" and "Accidental DBA" occupy separate places in our heads, when they really shouldn't.
