Hi,
Bit of random one. Im about to build a new SQL Server and im thinking.
Why put it on Windows Server 2008 r2 instead of Windows 7.
Apart from how we roll out updates to them being different. Does it really effect SQL Server? Its not going to be using megea tones of RAM, Its only a VM so wont be using much of anything. Windows 7 licenses are cheaper than Server licenses (Is this reason this has come to mind).
Any one have any input.. Im sure im being short sighted but i really cant think what difference it will make to SQL Server what OS its on.

Your decision should be based on the requirements? Is the intended platform a PC?
What edition do you plan on installing? This requires some research.
Not enough information to provide a solution.
Personally I would not use Windows 7 for the OS on a VM Environment.:w00t:

Hi thanks for the reply.
Slight tangent but why wouldn't you use Win7 on a VM?
The SQL Instance is for a Monitoring DB (Ie for Red Gates SQL Monitor etC) So ill be the only one connecting. Its requirements mean i could use SQL Express as the SQL Version. But i will probably go with SQL Std (Just because the file may be larger than 10gb)
I realise its the norm to install SQL on Server. But im just not sure what the advantages would be in this case. With a small SQL single instance less than 4gb memory etc (it will only be monitoring 4-6 instances by the way). Why use Server instead of win7.
thanks
