Hi all
i am looking for some advise. I am a SQL DBA (10years exp.) looking to get into Oracle. I was wondering if anyone could suggest a best way of becoming an Oracle DBA. I found out that the oracle does workshops for the beginners, judging by the schedule some of it looks a bit basic.
Has anyone done this kind of transition successfully..
any input is appreciated.
cheers

Hi,
if you start new with oracle it's best to start from scratch.
As a Oracle DBA you have not only the RDBMS to master. You also have Linux, UNIX and WINDOWS to deal with. As SQL DBA you need at least also basic understanding in Linux and Unix. (Crontab, Filesystem, Batchjobs (KSH, SH), Editors like VI 🙂 etc. It Also depends what version of oracle you have to deal with. In Oracle 11 you have new features like ASM. So if you have no expirience with Oracle, the Beginner Course make sense. Because you have a lot more to deal with Storage and Memory parameters and so on.
I started with the Oracle DBA for Oracle 9i and a extra Course for RMAN, the Backup tool. had a lot of New features course since then.
For Prerequisites take a look at the Oracle Univerity.

Hey Luzi62,
thanks for the feedback. That was also my feeling. The SQL part is not too bad but the other other bits are bit more complicated.

About two years after starting working with Oracle is when you will start to realize how different are SQL Server and Oracle implementations of the same basic principles.
Question is, do you have access to Oracle? are there Oracle databases in you shop?
If the answer is Yes, ask your boss to allow you start working on Oracle related tasks.
If the answer is No, go to oracle.com and download Oracle software, install it at home and start learning.
Good news are...
... Oracle is free for training purposes.
... All Oracle documentation is free and public.
