You need a book because Oracle is not like SQL Server but you can manage it with client running on any Windows box. The docs are not very helpful but there is a site like SQL Server central once run by users now owned by suits any question you have post it at the right forum and you will get answers. And test drive Embarcadero it will give you the same stats on Oracle as SQL Server. It is not complicated it is just different. Hope this helps.

Oracle DBA is very different from SQL Server DBA. It is not very user friendly. Also is your company using Oracle with their ERP system ? Which version of Oracle do you use? What kind of tool do you use? Do you use TOAD or other GUI interface? That will be much easier? Also which operating system does your company use? Oracle can run on UNIX, Window and main frame. You need to know the operating system too.
There are a lot of Oracle books from Oracle press or O'Reilly, I would buy the books from those two publishers.
In my old company, there were 3 Oracle DBA to maintain 1 Oracle database, and 3 SQL Server DBA to maintain 200 SQL Server database !!

Thanks for the help guys. I will use those forums when I can. It is Oracle 8ei, running on a Windows 2K machine. There is also only one gig of ram. We have a contract with a secondry company that said they will take care of removing the data out of the reporting tables. So I think I got saved this time.

8i changes the situation try to get your employer to get you an Oracle Meta link account and the embarcadero because it even tells you what is important to look for in the Oracle stats and I forgot get Toad because Quest is another suit that bought user created knowledge base. They bought Reveal Net of Chicago that had a site like SQL Server central for Oracle we just hang out then Quest bought them and shut the place down and turn the loot in to expensive tools. Swing by Mark Rittman's blog he helped me with 10g a while back. Oracle considered 8i a mistake because it was Object relational and so does not even support it in .NET development, a nightmare best forgotten.
