Opinion please: Microsoft or Transcender material for SQL 2008 certs

  • I read some rather scathing reviews of the Microsoft material being incomplete, so I'm not sure to whom to give my hard earned and dwindling money. Has anyone used both and can give a comparison? Since I'm going to have to order either, I can't do a hands-on comparison, which annoys me.

    Thanks!

  • Wayne,

I haven't used the Transcender stuff, but I just got the Microsoft book for 70-432, it isn't great, but I bought it instead of Denny Cherry's book because it includes practice questions. I'm in chapter 3 and I'm not really impressed by the book itself. The lessons cover one set of material and then the questions at the end of the lesson don't always match up with the material covered. I also thought the book would delve deeper into the topics and it has been a pretty high-level overview at this point. I'll let you know if I pass the test. Scheduled a month from today.

  • I'm not really sure which material you are comparing because there are different materials for each exam. If you are just comparing the practice exams, then Transcender wins hands-down. The Transcender Practice Exams are focused on the topics that are on the actual exam and they have good explanations and references for each question. The Microsoft practice exams that are included with the books are overly broad and don't give any explanations or references, just right and wrong answers with lots of mistakes.

However, Transcender also has some study guides (150 to 300 pages) for certain exams. For example, on the 70-432 Implementation and Maintenance exam Transcender offers both the Study Guide and the Practice Exams. Are you comparing the Transcender Study Guide versus the Microsoft Self-Paced Training Kit book?

I use Transcender Practice Exams for every exam I take, but I've never used the Study Guides as I prefer printed books over e-books.
