I have a new SQL 2005 SP1 on Win2003 SP1 64 bit install. When I goto open up Management Studio it takes about 2 minutes to open. Inside Mgt Studio some operations take that long as well. In the bottom left of the session I get a message of:
Manangement Studio is waiting for an internal operation to complete. If you regularly encounter this delay during normal operations please report this problem to Microsoft.
Before I place a call to them I wanted to see if any others are experiencing this. I have another SQL 2005 SP1 on Win2003 Standard Edition that is having the same issue.

Basically, it is a memory hog. If you have less than 1GB forget it.
Also, in the Tools/Options make sure that under the General tab you select "Open Empty Environment" at start up.
Also, see this link http://weblogs.asp.net/savanness/archive/2003/06/22/9124.aspx
I think the SQL Management equivalent is -nosplash but can't find the link.

Here's another thing to look at that can impact start-up time: http://blogs.msdn.com/dtjones/archive/2006/08/23/714738.aspx

Thanks for your assistance. I just found a KB article that states on the 64 bit platform that Mgt Studio will take quite a long time for certain operations. This is due to the fact that the tools are actually 32 bit and not 64 bit. It suggests that you admin. a 64 bit install via a desktop or another server running 32 bit. That does work but Jeesh !!!!
