Opening Ports on Firewall

  • We would like to access our offsite extranet from within the domain in our primary  office.  My question is 2 part:

I am pretty sure I need to open a port on the extranet firewall to allow access to it correct?  But the bigger question is … for me to gain application access to the data and possibly replication from the extranet to our primary domain is as follows:

Do I need to open a port in the firewall for our primary domain in the office?

I guess it comes down to if a one way trust is enough or do I need a 2 way trust?

  • easiest way to check

get a PC, record the IP

    try to access the extranet

check FW logs to see which ports are being used

create rule to open the ports

    test again

  • There are some pretty extensive rules on what to open and not to open. The first question is how do you connect to the Extranet? Is a tunnel created by the technology? Is it a VPN technology?
