Well, put it in comparison to what the owners were pulling in and I can see where they were coming from. This is especially considering that there wasn't any free agency and there was collusion even after they were. So the owners might be making a ton of money off of a player and the player gets pennies on the dollar of that earning. Not exactly fair... which has been the argument in the other pro sports strikes.
Don't get me wrong, I see where you're coming from. 80K is a huge amount of money for 1972. Most of us would have been glad to take that paycheck to play a game we played and loved as kids.

Whether it's playing baseball, rock-climbing, or whatever, more and more research is showing the beneficial effects of exercise not just on our bodies, but our minds also. The most recent issue of Newsweek has a great cover story about this. It shouldn't come as a great surprise that our bodies and minds are intimately connected, but still the new research and quantitative measurements which show this connection are very interesting.
So don't feel guilty about taking time to get out and hike, bike, go to the gym, etc. It is doing good things for your ability to process, learn, and remember informtion as well as getting you ready for the beach this summer. Not to mention other benefits like stress reduction and even longer-term benefits like enhancing your future health and productivity.

I've never been much for team sports, watchng or participating.
I do enjoy getting out onto the archery range on the weekends and into the dojo some evenings.
