Open .PRC with connection

  • Using V17.3 and 2008R2

When I double-click on an .sql file, SSMS v17 launches with a new connection window.
When I double-click on a .prc, the file is opened disconnected, and I can't even see a way to connect to a SQL Server.
How can I a) connect to a server, and or b) always get the connection window?

    TIA

Did you set or check prc files to have the same association as sql files?
Control panel, Default Programs, Set Default programs. It could be they are set to different versions of SSMS.

Should be associate file types instead of set defaults
Keep getting errors whenever I answer a post. Can sometimes preview posts but usually not.

  • So I go into Control Panel, Default Programs, Set Associations, navigate to .prc. It's currently set to 2008.

I get the choice of V17 and 2008 versions of SSMS under Recommended Programs. I click on the V17 icon... and the list re-loads and it's still pointing to 2008.

It sounds like it's just pointing to the 2008 version. Check this link and see if it helps - has some solutions for the same issue:
Opening .sql files in SSMS 2012 as default program and with existing instance

I use FileTypesMan from NirSoft as I can view a lot more of where things are pointing - especially for multiple apps like SSMS:

  • Still opens in SQL 17 disconnected. Which would be fine if there was some way to connect to something.

    Thanks Sue.
