Online T-SQL Scripts and Copyright

  • Eric M Russell (11/30/2016)

    ...I would consider published source code to be similar in concept to a cooking recipe. Someone, possibly a skilled professional, put effort into developing the perfect pumpkin pie, but if they publish step-by-step instructions on the web, they should expect folks will use it as is or in a modified form. It's just that when receiving compliments, I should give credit to the author and not pretend as if it were my own creation.

    Here is a good discussion of recipes and copyright law:

    (I'm republishing the book: https://cookbooks.leannebrown.com/good-and-cheap.pdf as a set of wiki pages: https://sterbalfamilyrecipes.miraheze.org/wiki/Category:Good_and_Cheap_Recipes)

    I needed permission to post the images, not the ingredients list and directions.

    sorry..I am a bit confused with your recent posts on this site...what issue are you asking for clarification on?

  • Some people copyright their articles/blog posts but explicitly specify that the code is free to use. This is a reasonable case where the author is trying to educate but attempting to stop the shameless people who copy such an article and post it as their own.

    I think that the law in a lot of countries require a reasonable level of creativity and/or uniqueness before copyright can apply i.e. Eric's GetDate script is not a valid copyright case (sorry Eric). Otherwise I would be able to build upon Eric's work and produce my own (albeit with some use of Eric's):

    -- (c)2016 Shonkey Gaz - All Rights Reserved

    -- Portions (c)2016 Eric Russell.

    SELECT GETDATE();

    That semicolon makes all the difference!!! 😉

    Amongst other reasons to copyright your own work is to stop another party copyrighting it and them stopping you from using it. A despicable act but one that has occurred more than once.

    Gaz

    And here I thought Eric was tyring to copywrite the Byte Me! and the GETDATE() was just getting the date of the copyright!:w00t:

    Byte me!

    -- (c)2016 Eric Russell - All Rights Reserved

    SELECT GETDATE()

  • Maybe he was. :laugh:

  • The vast majority of the scripts published here do not contain a copyright notice. That means any time I want to use a script I need to reach out to the page author for permission.

    Does anyone else do this more than 5 times a year? (just to give it a specific metric)
