In my life there's different kinds of traveling. Traveling with my better half any way or any place is loads of fun. Going on a Boy Scout camp out with my son, sorta fun, but I'm an involved parent. My husband usually schedules a trip to see his Mum (about a half day by plane and rental car) when I'm doing my scout thing. Traveling for business is just plain work. Besides, I miss my better half when we're apart. We keep business travel to a minimum.

In a way, I envy people who get to travel with their job - but then, it would also suck to travel like one bloke in IT that I know who is in another State Capital for most of his week (sometimes up to 3 different states or even heading to New Zealand). I like travelling on the coin of the company though as it means that *I* don't have to pay for it. Every company I've worked for says that there is *some* travel involved but it never works out that way. Even a couple of trips a year would be nice. Being sent overseas would be GREAT!
Of course, I am single so there are no kids or wife (or anyone else other than the cats) to think about.
The only bad thing about flying is that you miss out on what Robert Louis Stevenson wrote about travelling in that it's not the destination but the trip itself. Flying is walking into a building and disappearing and turning up at another building several hours later. All they need to do is improve the 'Star Trek' bit so that those few hours become seconds and the transport method is all that will change. You see nothing from planes
I'm quite lucky with flying though - when I get on a plane, I just about need those eye-opening clamps that they used on that bloke in A Clockwork Orange so that I can stay awake long enough to get a coffee and then I go to sleep. Brisbane to Singapore is about 10 hours (I think) and Singapore to Frankfurt is about the same - I sleep for at least 7 hours on each leg (yes - that is in the cattle-crate class known as 'economy'....).
I'll be happy to take your place, Steve
A lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on mine.

My other half used to do day trips to Boston and NewYork for 1 hour lunch meetings....from Dublin, Ireland (3000ml each way). Now that's been swopped for 3-country day trips around Europe - Denmark, Norway, Sweden and home via Lativa/Estonia.
And my brother used to work for a year near the Boeing factory in Seattle...except he lived in CT. Fly out Monday morning and fly back Friday lunchtime. Neither counts the airmiles anymore. They just end up getting passed on as upgrades for family.
Enjoy the trip Steve...just watch out for the invite to just "have one after work"!....those Brits can't count!!!

I'm here and it wasn't a horrible flight, though it wasn't great. At least my upgrade came through so I could get some sleep.
I used to work for a company and I once flew Denver -> NY in the early am, had a 2 hour meeting in Manhattan, then flew home that night. That was no fun. After a few 1 and 2 day trips to NY and Boston, traveling lost it's allure.
