On Being an "Expert"

  • I have sometimes been surprised at things people I know are experts don't know.  I've also been surprised at things people with much less knowledge than me have contributed to my knowledge.  There is something to be said for expertise, but no one person knows everything.  That's why teams are so important.

  • Expert is not a point, it is a position on a continuum. Certainly, there is a minimum level of knowledge where the masses would consider someone an expert but above that point there are an infinite number of positions on the continuum that represent the amount of knowledge any one person has relative to that minimum.
