Is it ok to install an inventory management package client on SQL Server? We want to install Altiris on all of our servers for the purpose of inventory and patch management. Does anyone know if this could cause performance problems? I suspect any performance issues would pertain to the frequency at which the inventories occur, but if I told our team to limit the scan to once a day or once a week, I don't foresee any issues.
Thanks, Dave

The short answer is yes, it can, if you aren't careful. The long answer is it depends on how you deploy Altiris, how often you request inventory, and things of that sort. Altiris' inventory gathering can be processor intensive. But this isn't just relegated to Altiris. Try to schedule inventory collection during periods of low activity and try to do it only as much as is needed. If you're doing patch management through Altiris, be aware that it may run an MBSA scan frequently against your server as well.

Thanks. They will be checking for inventory changes daily and performing full scans monthly. I'll keep an eye on the performance.
