  • why should I do this or how would this work? If I take a single file from a filegroup offline, the data in the file will no longer accessible. And since the data for bigger tables are usually more or less equally distributed (there are exceptions as a recently added file or a 100 % filled file with no autogrowth), I wouldn't be able to run queries on my tables.

God is real, unless declared integer.

  • Moving a file to new storage, if it's large. Or a restore for file.

You can't run queries, but it can be useful in situations.

  • Why then does SQL Books Online say

OFFLINE Sets the file offline and makes all objects in the filegroup inaccessible.

    Or am I misinterpreting that?
