Odd error message when posting report to SSRS 2008

  So I developed a report in Report Builder 3.0, but when it posted to SSRS 2008.  I get the follow message about a read/write variable I have.

  The Writeable property of variable, CostCodes, is set to true.  SQL Server 2008 Reporting Services does not support variables that are read/write.  Either make the variable read-only or change the TargetServerVersion to a version that supports the read/write variables.

  So two questions, what version do we need to be on to support read/write variables?  Second, is there a work around for SSRS 2008?
