ODBC Driver

  • My computer did a major crash and burn. After reinstalling Windows 2000, SQL, MS Office, etc. I restored my backups of all my data. I have no problem working with the databases using MS Access, but when I try to use my previous queries through Excel it tells me that the odbc driver is missing. When I try to rebuild a new query, I can see that the "Microsoft SQL Server" driver is missing. Where can I find this driver and where should I copy it to in order to get back to where I was before the crash?

  • It's probably the MDAC that is missing. Go to Microsoft's web site and search for MDAC. Find the latest version, download it and just install it on the server with SQL Server installed.

You could also download Component Checker (freeware from Microsoft), run it on all your computers and it will tell you the version of MDAC installed. You can then make sure they are all the same level.

  • Thanks for the help. I installed the components as instructed. It is strange though. Prior to my problem when I would create a data source link to my database, I would use the "Microsoft SQL Server" entry; if I used the "SQL Server" entry it would not work. After the crash and reinstalling everything, plus downloading the MDAC components as you suggested, I still do not see the "Microsoft SQL Server" entry, but now I can use the "SQL Server" as a data source. I am going to have to redo all my Queries, but a least I can get to the data again.
