ODBC connection and A Record

  • Example scenario. Current odbc connection on a workstation is to CLIENT_SQL\DATABASE. This database is being moved to CLIENTSQL\DATABASE and the old server CLIENT_SQL is being decommissioned. We cannot name the new server the same as old server. If we set an A record in DNS so that CLIENT_SQL points to CLIENTSQL, will that odbc connection on a workstation still work?

    Thank you in advance.

  • It sounds good in theory, but I suggest trying it with a proof-of-concept test. Should be easy enough to test on a simple VM. Then you'll know for sure.

  • Worked for me when I did it at my previous work place. Get's a bit messy if you do it a lot.
