Hi All,
I'm just about to take responsibility for my first production SQL 2008 box, that I suspect will be SAN-attached.
Have you any suggestions on the questions I should ask my SAN admin to ensure it's set up properly wrt the SAN?
Also, what sort of things do you put in place to alert you if memory/disk starts getting hit hard or if a SQL Job starts failing?
I have some ideas of my own but would welcome any direct suggestions or articles you could point me to.
Many thanks

Questions are too broad, Paul. I wouldn't know where to start.
As far as SAN goes, however, I doubt you'll have any say in how it is set up. SAN is expensive, there are older models, newer models, you'll likely be stuck using whatever is there at the moment. So, don't concern yourself with SAN and instead focus on things which solely you can improve.
Answers to your questions also depend on the box you are supporting - transactions for operational systems or data warehouse?

Paul
Can I recommend you start by reading Brent Ozar's series on running SQL Server on a SAN and SAN best practices http://www.brentozar.com/sql/sql-server-san-best-practices/
Hope it helps and good luck

Many thanks, Gethyn: I heard some of Mr O's sessions at SQLBits and it's already on my list.
Excellent to have it recommended as well, though.
Cheers

No problem Paul, BrentO knows his SAN stuff. There is an MCM video(s) on storage SAN Performance etc. Maybe start with the blog series first though.

I STRONGLY recommend that you get a performance tuning mentor on board for a few days to help you set things up properly and teach you some of the MANY MANY things you need to know to be responsible for a production SQL Server.
