No Server using OSQL and Query Analyzer

  • Hi, I'm following the Microsoft Press book for Administering SQL 2000 and when I get to the lesson where I use The command prompt to give OSQL commands I am not seeing the results I should. I enter OSQL -L and should be seeing the names of the servers I have installed. What I get is No Server. I know they are there and can even connect using the OSQL -E -S command ( with the right info). I also cannot see any servers in the Query Analyzer when I click on the drop down box. I have followed all the instructions so far and have not had any problems. Any Ideas. Thanks.

  • Do you get nothing in the output or are you assuming it is done and it just hasn't finished maybe?

Or maybe you have yours setup to hide the server in netowkr setup utility for the protocols?

I see no issues and in fact wait several seconds to a mintue and get back a number of the nearby servers listed.

  • I'm pretty sure this is an Active Directory problem. I cannot add the server to the Active Directory. I don't understand why, but then again I am not an IT guy. I am usining a standalone computer with the NIC card set in loopback.

  • I don't know why, but I see that problem from time to time as well.  You can also see it when you register a new server in Enterprise Manager.  The select list may not show all the available servers.  I have seen this going all the way back to SQL 6.5.  Never gave it much thought, because I always knew which server I wanted, and just typed the server name in.

  • Found the problem!!! Just didn't have it added to the DNS listing on the W2K Server.
