No replies:(- URGENT:SAN and prodction backup server

  • Nobody replied to my query I am referring to 'URGENT:SAN and prodction backup server' thread.

Is it fine if we use production backup server for development? Good or bad idea?

    Regards,

    Madiha.

  • Not sure where that thread is, but you can use it. However, if things need to move there, then what happens to developement? Does it stop? Do you lose work? Is that ok?

Those are things you have to decide on and mitigate or accept.

  •  Thanks a lot for your reply. I got a bit of relief. Anyway, below is the original message. Thanks again.

I am new to DBA role.Hope I can benefit from some helpfull hints.

We have a SAN drive on our database production server. With few exceptions, database master files are on SAN drive while database log files are on another drive (i.e. D:\ drive). Daily backupd of databases are also stored on D:\ drive. Softwares are on C:\ drive. Drives other than SAN are on RAID level, meybe 2, I am not sure.

We also have a production backup server which comes in to play in case of a catastrophic failure as SAN drive is backed up daily while others are on RAID. In case of failue, SAN drive links to production backup server.

Having said about architecture, I have a question. We are startin work of new version of product but estimates for setting up development machine are a bit unreasonable. Using production backup server for development activity is under consideration. As a DBA, would you backup the decision. For eg. if there are 160 dbs in production environment, dev environment would have 11 dbs only. I would like to add that active directory is also installed on production and production backup servers. I would appreciate if you could share your thoughts with me if this is recommended or not.

Looking forward to some good advice.

    Regards,

    Madiha.
