No nicknames for replication?

  • I have several SQL databases in one instance on a server and am going to migrate to a larger server. For various reasons I need to do this gradually, a few users at a time.

I tried to test replication to keep the data synchronized in on both servers and found I cannot set it up because it cannot use nicknames like "local" or "default".

I can use other methods so it's not a major issue, but my question is this: how should I install future default instances so I can use replication if I decide I need it?

    Thanks for any advice.

  • Delete the SQL registration in EM and reregister using the instance name. It is always best to be on the box (teminal in) that is being used as the source.

  • If I name it will it still be the default instance? To connect, will I need to use the instance name or will just the computer name be OK?
