Okay, I'm as green as they get when it comes to administratering our SQL server; I have just completed MS's course on SQL 2000 Administration. What would be the #1 thing I need to ensure happens when I take over this job? I now know our server has never been backed up, this will be my first-thing Monday morning task. I'm a greenhorn here. Books? Procedures? I'm wingin' it here and asking for the experts help.
Thanks! Shairal

Anything you read will apply as a general, yes #1 is backups. But all the books and all the information will not help you as much as experience. The #1 thing after backups of an existing system is to setup a test system and play with everything, get familiar with everything (esp. Profiler and Execution Plan reading as these are your best troubleshooters). Also get familiar with Enterprise Manager and study Current Activity and SQL Server Logs. Reading books and sites can help but always test what you learn.
