I'm busy working on a project, and, I was trying to install SQL Server 2005 Enterprise on Windows Server 2008, both trial versions, in order to pre-test configurations for a development environment.
However, an error was displayed indicating that these are not compatible. This seems awkward because
- I can't install SQL Server 2008 either, due to the unavailability of Windows Installer 4.5 for Windows Server 2008. No version for MS Vista either (trial and error, maybe it works?!) T
Windows installer download location:
- "Edition requirements for Reporting Services in SharePoint integrated mode include Developer, Evaluation, Standard, or Enterprise editions. There is no support for this feature in the Workgroup edition or in SQL Server Express with Advanced Services"
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb283190.aspx
Requirements doesn't mention Windows Server 2008 as a matter of fact.
Any workarounds?

What was the error?
Likely the installer doesn't recognize W2K8, but I bet this will work fine. This used to occur with SQL 65 on W2K and SQL 7 on W2k3, but it worked fine.

Well it just read that there is an incompatibility issue; I don't remember the exact error msg.

If this was your error it seems to be suggesting you are in fact trying to install the workgroup edition of SQL 2005?

Well, the version reads Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Evaluation Edition: Trial Experience for IT Professionals, which I downloaded from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=6931fa7f-c094-49a2-a050-2d07993566ec&displaylang=en&Hash=EvEc2YKUF5M9Ad8yxSpStv4ztHZ1XFSCGpO0uOkVyDmGCYxfvdN2eVZY2FacP7hPd8M0m8%2bVwG2K%2bAZmZa4kaA%3d%3d#filelist

yep, looks correct. Was there an option to continue the install after this message was displayed.

Well, initially the autorun didn't do anything, so I ran the setup program. Any suggestions on getting around it?
- using SQL Server 2005 with reporting services?
- waiting for the installer to be available so I can install SQL Server 2008 and evaluate it...

Not sure I am totally clear on what you are trying to do, your error does not seem to tie in with what you are trying to do. I have not come across 'reporting services with integrated sharepoint ' before.
do you mean install SQL 2005 WITHOUT reporting services, because that is an option and you could install reporting services on a separate box (say with IIS)
Have you tried rerunning the install, and accepting OK to this message?
when doing the install go into advanced options and select only those features you want

I need to install SQL Server Enterprise 2005 because it's a pre-requisite for Sharepoint 2007 Reporting Services. The problem is that it is not supported on Windows Server 2008.
SQL Server 2005 Advanced Express Edition is not good enough according to MS. I don't know if there's a point in installing Reporting Services.

Jon,
does this help:
http://decoding.wordpress.com/2008/04/18/how-to-install-sql-server-2005-on-windows-server-2008/
potentially you need HF KB950636
I would really expect SQL 2005 to run on windows 2008, both are current supported versions.

We have SQL Server 2005 Standard running on Windows 2008 no problem (well...some cluster problem)
but they definitely install
Unless Enterprise edition isn't allowed
