Newbie Here With Question

  • Hello everyone! I was given a Access database that was created a couple years ago by someone else. The end user wants me to make some changes to some forms. The trouble i am having is i can not get to design view. I have tried the hold down shift key and does not work. I can see the objects (tables, queries, forms etc..) but can not make any changes to this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • What is the extension on the Access file? If it is .mde or .accde, then you have a compiled version that cannot be changed. Another less likely scenario is that Access user security has been enabled, but that would generate a user prompt for a password at login.

    It is a .mdb file

  • It sounds like it has been secured by the original developer, though the mechanism isn't obvious - in the same folder where the file resides is there a file with the extension .mdw? If so it is likely that Access User Security has been activated. One possibility is to try importing all objects into a new empty database - you may or may not be able to do that. Also it would help to know what version of Access the users have, and what version you have.

  • Make sure that you have write access to the folder where the database is. You have to be able to create a lock (lck) file in the folder in order to make updates to the database.

  • Is the mdb file readonly?

    Is the mdb file readonly?

Sean - I was able to figure it out. It was a stupid scrolling to fast and missed an option in privacy. I checked the check box 'Allow Full Menus' and it took care of my issue.

Thank you and everyone for helping out.
