New User Question Regarding SQL Server 2008 Reporting Services

  • I am a very new user of SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services and have finally managed to learn enough about this product to create, deploy and publish some reports. My question relates to upgrading to SQL Server 2008 Reporting Services. I've manged to create a report in 2008 but when I try to deploy the report I receive the following error message:

The report definition has an invalid target namespace 'http://schemas.microsoft.com/sqlserver/reporting/2008/01/reportdefinition' which cannot be upgraded.

Any help explaining where I've gone astray would be appreciated

  • It sounds like you upgraded the tools on your development machine, but that you did not upgrade the Report Server itself.

  • Thanks very much for your response....I'll check with my Server Admin folks.......Could this have anything to do with the fact that SQL Server 2005 and SQL Server 2008 are both installed on the same machine?

  • Do you mean on the same development machine or the same server?

You can have them side by side on both, but when developing reports you need to make sure you use the right version of BIDS and have it pointing to the matching server version for deployment.

I have 2005 and 2008 installed on my dev machine and as long as I develop 2005 targeted reports in BIDS 2005 I can deploy just fine to my 2005 report servers.

  • The two are installed on the same developmen environment on a Virtual Server. I'm fairly certain (but will verify) that the two are installed side by side on the same server (virtual).
