New to SQL

  • I have recently been re writing some of my companies access appz in VB.net - i am a noob to vb btw.

I would like to get into SQL / VB database design etc etc.......

I cannot afford uni or college and have so far been self teaching myself.

Can anyone recommend good walkthroughs or books to buy that wil aid me?

  • Do a site and/or online search (including the Google Groups) with smart search criterias. You will find almost everything you need to know there. If not, feel free to ask here.

  • In addition to asking questions here I have some handy books that I like to use

MS Press:  Inside SQL Server 2000

    Sybex: Mastering SQL Server 2000

Osborne:  SQL Server 2000 The Complete Reference

I have bought the above books each for a specific purpose because they touch more on a specific topic then other books.

If you are wondering which books to personally buy go to your local bookstore and read parts of some of the books.  Each author has a different style and you either like it or not.

  • are there any specific books that u know of that deal soley with SQl and VB??

  • I've got "Visual Basic .NET and SQL Server 2000" from Wrox.  Is that specific enough?

Go to Wrox, Microsoft Press, or another technical publisher.  Or go to Amazon.  Either way, you'll find many titles to choose from.

  • I really like "SQL for Smarties" by Celko.

He posts here and is very active in google groups as well.

  • One might find Joe Celko's books are good brainteasers, however there seems to be very little VB in them

What about having a look at the books by William Vaughn?

    ...or the classic Donald Knuth
