New to replication (environment)

  • Hi all,

I've inherited an cluster with 2k Replication, it's my first foray into this area of SQL, could anyone let me know where in the console I can start to get a feel for the system?

    Cheers,

  • Launch "Enterprise Manager", register the server, and then navigate to "Replication Monitor"

  • Hi, Buy ISBN 0-9749736-0-2 A Guide to SQL Server 2000 Transactional & Snapshot Replication by Hilary Cotter. I highly recommend it. We have 4 cluster SQL2K servers using a central distributor and the book helped me immensely setting up replication. Apart from being an indepth technical resource it will give you an excellent over of replication and the pertinent components. Essentialy you configure a Publisher, define your publication ( ie articles ), subscribe to the publication (normally from a database on another server ). To get things moving you must first generate a snapshot and then start applying designated transactions to the subscriber. Snapshot.exe, logreader agent and distrib.exe are components you should delve into. I picked up on the book from other people on sqlservercentral.com. I'd be only too happy to assist you ( if I can ) with any issues in relation to replication you may have. Hope this helps. Derek.

  • Hopefully if this is a production system then the replication will be documented. If not then your learning task would be to do so, that way you'd understand the structure deployed.

I suspect you have snapshot and/or transactional replication. You need to identify the publisher(s), distributor and subscriber(s). As replication can be a bit of a pig if it goes wrong you probably need to learn very quickly!!

Paul Ibison runs a very informative web site, http://www.replicationanswers.com/Default.asp  this is always my first stop if I'm looking for information.
