  • For your first question I may can help. If you have installed analysis services on your server, you can connect through SSMS. Click on connect, choose Analysis Services and the appropriate authentication mode (windows would be the best).

For you second question you have to wait for somebody more qualified than me in analysis services.

  • The upgrade advisor / upgrade wizard for SQL Server 2005 will also upgrade Analysis Services and it will work on many Analysis Services 2000 cubes.  If you go this route, however, you will miss out on the opportunity to make some huge leaps forward with your data warehouse implementation.

Take the time to read just the simplest bullet list of new features of SSAS 2005 and you will find that you now have the ability to structure your cubes much differently that you did before.  For instance, you can create more than one fact table per cube, create many-to-many relationships with your dimensions, use dimension properties in a much more meaningful way, etc.

The up side is that Microsoft has made the project much better than it was before.  The down side is that it is very different than it was.  If you are planning on a migration or upgrade, take the time to read up on all of the new features and if you have the opportunity, take one of the Microsoft courses.  I have only gotten to take a beta version of the SSAS courses, but it may make you re-think the simple upgrade route.
