New SQL Server Programmer from Russia!

  • Hi everyone! My name is Oksana, I am from Russia! I was before crystal reports developer but now another girl who was SQL Server DBA left the firm I work for and I am also now SQL Server DBA! My level is beginner and I want to raise my level higher! I know SQL language because I worked with Microsoft Access for several years, but not really DBA functions. I will show huge appreciation for your help to learn SQL Server better! 🙂 Thank you!

  • Hello,

I had just posted this link to another thread, but may be it will help you as well, if you are interested in the DBA side of SQL Server: http://www.simple-talk.com/sql/database-administration/brads-sure-dba-checklist/

  • Hello New DBA!

I would first recommend getting a book from Microsoft Press called SQL 2005 Administrator's Pocket Guide. I'm assuming that you are working with SQL 2005. If not get the SQL 2000 Administrator's Pocket Guide. The Microsoft books are an excellent start. I use them when I started as a DBA.

This site is also an excellent source for all kinds of help and information.

    Good Luck 🙂

    Rudy

  • Read the daily articles here and on SQLTEam, Database Journal, Simple Talk, etc. and learn. Try answering questions here, pick up a book.

We can help with specific questions if you don't understand a concept.

  • Hello and I thank everyone for your reply!

Rudy, it's hard to get IT books in English here in my city but I can ask someone to send me it from America.

About specific question: Now I have a database that is very slow(sluggish?). I know about SQL Profiler but I look in there and I am not sure what to look for? What would you do step by step to find out why the queries and reports take a long time? Thanks!

    Oksana.

  • Could you start a new thread with that question in the performance forum?

Standard forum etiquette is to post a question in a new thread, with a descriptive title, so that people get a good idea from the title what the problem is.

  • I agree. But in the mean time. I would recommend going to http://www.quest.com and download Spotlight for SQL Server (Red Gate has a tool but I can't remember the name). This is a SQL diagnostics tool. The download is is a 15 day trail but in the meantime, it will help you diagnose your server problem.

    Hope this helps.
