New skills

  • I have been slowly progressing as a DBA for a couple of years and I need some new skill sets.

I have read that I need to learn VBScript but some say it is dying. Also, I know a little about XML but not alot about how I can take advantage of it at work. Where could I get this information? I also see alot of jobs that also require C#. I have a little Java experience and C# is quite similar and seems fun.

    Where should I start?

  • C# or VB.net with SQL 2000/2005 is good match & paid well.

  • Seth,

I'd think you'd be better off focusing on solutions and then finding a technology that suits. For example, you might find it useful to start a series of SQL agent jobs by group, rather than individually. You could write a custom app to do this using VB.net and SMO (for SQL 2005). You've solved a problem and learned something new at the same time. You've done three things:

    • You've learned a bit about SMO (and SQL 2005)
    • You've learned something about VB.net
    • You've solved a problem

    Hope that helps!
