New Linked Server - Provider name drop-down list is empty

  • I've come across a problem that I've never seen before nor have any of my colleagues.

I want to create a new linked server to an Oracle datasource.  I've installed the Oracle client, configured the tnsnames.ora file and have successfully connected to the Oracle datasource via SQLPlus.

When I go to create the linked server the provider name drop-down list is blank.  The list opens but there are no OLE DB providers listed.

I verified that the MSDAORA.DLL file exists, I've un-registered and re-registered it.  I even reinstalled MDAC.

I checked on another server that we setup as a uat box and it has the same issue.  The Oracle client has not been installed on the uat box so it looks like this issue has existed since the installation of SQL Server.

Anyone else ever seen this behaviour?

    Thanks,

    Neal

  • Yep - I have it happen to me about once every month, but we use an old version of Openlink ODBC (3.2) which the vendor won't support anymore, and it is causing memory dumps to occur. We plan to upgrade eventually, but when I see the  problem occurring usually with other symptoms such as unable to see the linked server tables, the only recourse has been to reboot the server. I am hoping the upgrade to the new version of drivers rectifies this issue. One colleague suggested the memory dumps where due to incompatible MDAC versions between the linked servers.
