new license needed for Analysis Server on box separate from SQL Server?

  • We want to install Analysis Server.  However, we have our SQL Server Database on a cluster, and I don't think we need to put the Analysis Server on a cluster since it seems very complex to do so, and it isn't really needed.  Does anyone know if we would need an additional SQL Server license just to install Analysis Server on a separate server?  Thanks.

  • It might be useful to look at some of the licensing scenarios Microsoft outline here and also at their FAQ.

    HTH,

    Steve.

  • Yes you would need another license. the license if for the same machine. You can put analysis services on a clustered box and just not cluster the app. If the box fails SQL Server will roll over but AS will be dead, so tell your analysts to chill.
